Interview with July 2018 Artist of the Month Trey Connor

Tell us a little bit about yourself! When did you discover your love for music?

I started off playing guitar at age eleven after stereotypically being inspired by the video game, Guitar Hero. After a year or so, I knew that I wanted a career in music. It wasn’t until I was thirteen that I tried singing. Then I picked up bass and drums along the way and really got into writing music. After playing the local coffee shop circuit for a few years, I started my first fairly successful rock band, Bulletproof Snow. We did some cool stuff including receiving the Detroit Music Awards People’s Choice Award and winning a slot in the 2012 Rockstar Uproar festival at DTE Energy Music Theatre. After high school I was recruited to be on season ten of NBC’s “The Voice.” Although all four teams filled up before I performed my blind audition, I came home with better training and incredibly talented, life-long friends. I recorded my first solo EP as a pop/rock artist soon after and have put all my time and energy into my music ever since.

How has growing up near Detroit/Flint, Michigan shaped your musical career?

There’s a lot of music history in Detroit and the city is definitely making a comeback, including the music scene. There are a ton of up and coming bands and musicians coming out of Detroit, and they’re doing great things. That alone has inspired me to chase a career in music.

Who has been your biggest inspiration in your musical career?

This is a tough one because I’ve been influenced and inspired by so many different artists. If I had to narrow it down to one, I’d have to say Dave Grohl. Although I don’t follow the Foo Fighters as much anymore, I was into harder rock for the first few years that I started playing the guitar. He’s an incredible musician and had a huge impact on my early music career.

It sounds like you have had the opportunity to perform at a lot of awesome shows. What has been your favorite performance so far, and why?

I think my favorite show was at DTE Energy Music Theatre in Clarkston, MI for the Rockstar Uproar Music Festival in the summer of 2013 with my former band Bulletproof Snow. We won a slot for the show that Alice in Chains, Coheed and Cambria, and Jane’s Addiction co-headlined. It was a great crowd and a great experience.

From your bio, we know that you and your previous band Bulletproof Snow won the 2015 Detroit Music Awards: People's Choice Award for your song "Here We Come". What do you think it is about this song that resonates so well?

I think this song has big energy because it expresses my passion for music and drive to achieve the world. I was fairly young when I wrote it and felt like the sky was the limit. It’s an old song but the message in the lyrics still hold true and it still inspires me to keep pushing through when things get tough.

What can we expect to see from you in 2018 and beyond?

I’m always writing music and plan to get back in the studio as soon as I can. As of January, my music career has been my main focus so people can expect more shows and more music!
